Fraud is happening each and every day and can happen to anyone. Even right here in North Dakota and Minnesota, our members are getting scammed out of thousands of dollars. Here at FCCU, we want to help educate our members and make sure you are protected.

January Scam of the Month

Romance Scams:

Scammers use fake online dating profiles and/or social media and pretend to be someone else to start a fake romance and eventually scam their “Sweetheart”. These scammers typically profess their love very quickly and use different tactics to tug at the heart strings of their victim to lay the premise for why they need money.

Some of the top reasons for requested funds:

  1. Travel to visit their sweetheart
  2. Customs fees
  3. Their money is tied up and they cannot access it
  4. Waiting on an inheritance

The victims usually wire their romantic partner funds to help them and can often get entangled into money laundering schemes and will be used as money mules. The fraudster will also coach their sweetheart on what to say at the branch and convince them not to trust FCCU. The branch will attempt to ask questions, but they are typically evaded. It is very important to trust your local branch as they are ready and able to help you to avoid personal and financial losses.
